Polyglycolic Acid Rapid (PGAR)

Overview
Premisut PGAR suture (Polyglycolic acid), is a sterile synthetic multifilament braided fast absorbable surgical suture prepared from homopolymers of 100% Glycolide. Premisut PGAR suture uses a polymer material with a lower molecular weight than regular Premisut PGA (Polyglycolic acid suture), making it fast absorbable leading to rapid loss of tensile strength after implantation. Premisut PGAR suture is available in undyed form. For added lubrication, smooth passage through tissue and easy knot tie down, Premisut PGAR suture is coated with a mixture of polycaprolactone and calcium stearate.

Premisut PGAR suture is intended for use in general soft tissue approximation where only short term wound support is required and where rapid absorption of the suturewould be beneficial. Due to the rapid absorption profile, Premisut PGAR suture is useful for skin closure, particularly in paediatric surgery, episiotomies, circumcision and closureof oral mucosa. Premisut PGAR suture is also useful for conjuctival suturing in ophthalmic surgery.

Premisut PGAR suture after implantation elicits a mild to moderate initial inflammatory reaction in tissues and is eventually replaced with an ingrowth of fibrous connective tissue. Premisut PGAR suture being absorbable in nature gets absorbed in the tissues by means of hydrolysis, during which the Polyglycolic acid polymer is degraded into Glycolic acid which is eventually absorbed and metabolized in the body. This process of absorption initially leads to progressive loss of tensile strength, followed by a loss of mass.
