Polyglycolic Acid (PGA)

Overview
Premisut PGA suture (Polyglycolic acid), is a sterile synthetic multifilament braided absorbable surgical suture prepared from homopolymers of 100% Glycolide. Premisut PGA suture is dyed with D&C Violet No 2 (conforming to U.S.Code of Federal regulations). Premisut PGA suture is available in undyed form also. For added lubrications, smooth passage through tissue and easy knot tie down, Premisut PGA suture is coated with a mixture of polycaprolactone and calcium stearate.

Indicated in surgical procedures where a combination of an absorbable suture andshort term wound support is required for wound closure, soft tissue approximation and/or ligation.

Premisut PGA suture after implantation elicits a mild initial inflammatory reaction in tissues and is eventually replaced with an ingrowth of fibrous connective tissue. Premisut PGA suture being absorbable in nature gets absorbed in the tissues by means of hydrolysis, during which the Polyglycolic acid polymer is degraded into Glycolic acid which is eventually absorbed and metabolized in the body. This process of absorption initially leads to progressive loss of tensile strength, followed by a loss of mass.

The technical characteristics may slightly vary or be adjusted depending on the needs of each market (e.g. coating, tensile strength, needle composition, packaging etc)
